canon tells us hogwarts was founded “just over one thousand years ago” by four learned individuals: godric gryffindor, salazar slytherin, rowena ravenclaw, and helga hufflepuff. i’m here to tell you why this entire part of canon is capital-w wrong and how jkr could have potentially fixed it. this argument will be grounded in historical context, so expect a great deal of nit-picking and arguing of semantics. why is this important, you might ask? well, it’s not. but this has been on my mind more or less for the better part of a year, so i’m going to damn well write this out.

i would also like to preface my argument by this: under no circumstances do i make pretensions to be a medieval expert. i do however have a keen personal interest in the medieval period, am in my final year as a history major, and intend to pursue an honor’s dissertation in medieval studies. say it with me: i’m not an expert. this was also written in a rush of passion etc. so please forgive any small errors. here goes.
